Today, Südzucker is Europe's biggest sugar producer, with over 50 sugar factories reaching from France in the west, via Belgium, Germany and Austria, to Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary and Moldova in the east. It all started in 1926, when five south German sugar companies, already loosely associated, merged by forming Süddeutsche Zucker-AG in Mannheim and thus giving south German sugar producers a real perspective for the future. After merging with Zuckerfabrik Franken GmbH in 1988 the company grew through its investments in AGRANA, Raffinerie Tirlemontoise and Saint Louis Sucre, thereby changing from being a regional sugar producer to an international group with some 18,000 employees and a turnover of 4.6 billion today.
