For 2003, Malaysia exported passenger vehicles, components, parts and accessories valued at RM1.02 billion (US$269.3 million).

Proton and Perodua passenger cars are finding growing acceptance in the USA, Australia and Singapore whereas Modenas motorcycles are becoming popular in Taiwan.

Malaysia is a major OEM location for motor vehicle parts and accessories. Durable, premium quality and reasonably prices motor vehicle parts have made Malaysia a preferred supplier for Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan and the UK.

Cars and Motorcycles

Proton
Synonymous with value-for-money and quality passenger cars, Proton has made headway in more than 40 markets. Major markets include the UK and Australia. A recent (year 2000) survey conducted in the UK, ranked Proton 3rd in terms of customer satisfaction.

Models in the Proton stable include :

  • the Waja 1.6 Sedan with its stylish good looks
  • the Perdana V6 and Perdana 2.0 executive saloons, Proton's high-end models
  • the Proton Wira sedan and hatchback featuring different engine capacities
  • the Proton Iswara sedan and hatchback featuring different engine capacities
  • the sporty Proton Satria (or Lotus Proton) GTi and Satria hatchbacks and
  • the Proton Putra 1.8 coupe

Perodua
Other than the UK, these made-in-Malaysia compact passenger vehicles are also carving out a niche in Egypt, Malta, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Lebanon, Qatar and Jordan. Perodua's diverse models are designed to fulfil the needs of different buying segments. At present, models in the Perodua include :

  • the new multipurpose vehicle (MPV) Kenari
  • the sports utility vehicle (SUV) Kembara and
  • the Kancil passenger car with different engine capacities starting from 660cc

Modenas
Modenas’ Kriss 110 cc and Jaguh 175 cc motorcycles appeal to motorcycle buyers across the globe. Taiwan is the primary export market, while other new markets include Singapore, Cambodia, Greece, South Africa, Iran, Vietnam, Turkey, Argentina, Malta, Brunei, Egypt and Mauritius.

Automotive Parts and Accessories
Quality and competitive prices have made Malaysia a preferred location for OEM production of automotive parts, components and accessories. OEM parts are manufactured to meet the stringent standards of global brands such as Mercedes, Mazda, Kia, Ford, General Motors, Suzuki, Nissan and Mitsubishi.

Parts produced include:

  • body panels and other body components such as safety glass, weather strips and mouldings engine parts such as filters, radiators, radiator hoses, housing for air filters, spark plugs, and pistons.
  • drive transmission and steering parts such as gearshift components, drive shafts, wheel rims, wheel nuts and studs, brakes, shock absorber, brake drums, discs and pads
  • electrical parts such as batteries, horns, wiring harnesses, alternators, starter motors, clocks, fuse boxes, headlights and other lights
  • trim and upholstery such as carpet and floor mats, seats and safety belts
  • parts such as tyres and inner tubes, air conditioners, radios, fuel tanks, exhaust systems, control cables and mirrors

Trends/Developments
Malaysia is now shifting towards ODM with a focus on R&D and design engineering. Proton now boasts superior abilities in design engineering through its subsidiary Group Lotus Inc, one of the world’s leading automotive engineering consultancies with clients including major car companies, OEMs and tier one suppliers.

With Group Lotus aid, Proton has moved confidently into design. Proton has designed, developed and manufactured the S-ENG, its own cost-competitive small petrol engine for cars with engines ranging from 1.3 to 1.6 litres. Flexible and versatile,the S-ENG’s architecture can easily accommodate potential higher-powered energy derivatives such as compressed natural gas and bi-fuel (gas and petrol).
